Thoughtful study and learning about God’s Word is a foundation of the Christian faith. We believe that learning can be enhanced by small group interactions to explore and interact on the messages our Lord gives to us. Our Learning Ministry is designed to provide those opportunities for individuals to grow their faith through thought provoking study. All are welcome to attend any of our interactions, both those who attend our church and those who go elsewhere, or not at all.
Please feel free to join us on this journey of faith and discipleship as we study God’s word. “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15
What We Do
Described below are three opportunities to study God’s Word in a small group setting.
Pastor's Home Study
This time is discipleship building as we seek direction form Scripture and especially what Jesus did and taught. Our studies have included a Parallel of the Gospels, A History of Christianity, issues of applied Christianity, and book studies such as The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan. As we learn from Scripture we seek to apply it to our lives and so studies of others who have set the example are readily received by those who attend.
The setting is usually that of a private home where the nurture and respect of each person is highly valued and the differing thoughts of all bring a richness to the dialogue.
Because many of our congregants are “RVers" we schedule these studies during the fall and winter of each year so as to maximize participation. I would be glad to talk or email with anyone who would like to know more about the content and objectives of the studies.
Our present study, Gospel Parallels, is meeting on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., and gathers at the home of Jerry and Dee Thomas located at the North Ranch RV park in Congress, AZ, just a 15 minute drive down Yarnell Hill. It will conclude just before Easter Sunday as we look closely at the passion of Christ.
This seasonal time is deeply meaningful for me personally as I learn more with those who share from their lives and enrich my own. Let me hear from you as you would like to be part of these gatherings.

Women's Fellowship Bible Study (from WF/Bible Study Ministry- the same text remains there)
This bible study is the Horizons bible study put out every year by Presbyterians USA Presbyterian Women. It starts the second week of January and will go for nine weeks until the end of March. Note: men are welcome to participate in these studies.
We have met at North Ranch every year and some years have had it at the church. Ruby McKinzie and Marlys Giesecke are the leaders of this study.
The bible study for 2018 will be Cloud of Witnesses a Community of Christ in Hebrews by Melissa Bane Sevier. This ever present great cloud of Witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) strengthens and encourages us as we run with Perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and of our faith(Hebrews 12:1b-2 God, be the love to search and keep me. God, be the prayer to move my voice God, be the strength to now uphold me O Christ, Surround me. God of our lives, you send us out with renewed minds. Christ of our hearts, you send us out with renewed faith. Sprit of our community, you send us out with renewed friendships. Give us minds, faith, and relationships that reflect the beauty of your love. Amen

Word-Share-Prayer is a powerful yet simple tool that is designed to lead a group through three sacred moments of engagement with God and with each other.
Word - reading scripture anew and discussing new and old insights into what God is revealing
Share - sharing the blessings and concerns of life
Prayer – praying with gratitude for blessings and requests for others
An example of the worksheet we use has these components:
READ: A specific verse or verses from scripture, often related to the day’s service
REFLECT: Enjoy this beautiful passage. Ask God for new insights. What do you learn about the Christian life and ministry?
RESPOND: How will you apply this text to your life and ministry?
REQUEST: Jot down prayer requests that you and others may have.
We use this structure in two venues at YCPC.
- Sunday morning at 9:00 am, prior to Service, a small group meets. We discuss our answers to the questions described above. Each participant shares their interpretation of the scripture and what it means to him or her. There are no “right answers” and it is OK to pass and just listen. It is amazing how different individual perspectives are of the same verse. It is a learning and broadening experience. We close, holding hands, with prayer blessings and requests. YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN US for Word-Share-Prayer each Sunday.
- We often start our church meetings using the same worksheet with a verse selected by the meeting leader. This is an abbreviated version that serves to focus our minds to “be the people of God before doing the work of the people of God.”
Word-Share-Prayer was created by E. Stanley Ott of the Vital Churches Institute.
